Drywall Taping & Finishing in Las Cruces
Tape, bed, and multi-coat mudding finished to the level you need — up to a Level 5 skim coat.
The Craft Part of Drywall
Finishing is where drywall becomes a wall you want to look at. It is a staged process — tape and bed the seams, then two or three coats of compound, each wider and more carefully feathered than the last, with sanding in between — and the quality of the final wall is entirely in how patiently those stages are done. We finish newly hung board to the industry levels, from a standard Level 4 for textured walls up to a Level 5 skim coat where a smooth, high-sheen wall will be living under raking light.
Level 5 — a thin skim coat over the entire surface — is the finish that keeps flat and glossy paint from telegraphing every seam and fastener. It is the right call for smooth walls in bright rooms and for the custom homes around Picacho Hills and Las Alturas.
- Seams taped and bedded, then two to three feathered coats
- Sanded between coats for a genuinely flat surface
- Level 4 finish for textured walls, Level 5 skim coat for smooth
- Inside and outside corners run clean and straight
When You Need Level 5
If your walls are smooth (not textured) and will get a satin, semi-gloss, or any sheen of paint — or sit in a room with big windows and strong side light — a Level 5 skim coat is what prevents the finished wall from showing every joint. We will tell you honestly when a project needs it and when a Level 4 is plenty.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Level 5 drywall finish?
Level 5 is a thin skim coat of compound over the entire wall on top of the normal taping and coating, giving a uniform surface with no telegraphing of seams or fasteners. It is used for smooth walls, glossy paints, and rooms with strong raking light.
Do I need Level 5 or is Level 4 enough?
Textured walls and flat paint are usually fine at Level 4. Smooth walls, any sheen of paint, and bright side-lit rooms benefit from Level 5. We will recommend the right level for your specific walls rather than upselling by default.
How much does drywall finishing cost?
Taping and finishing in Las Cruces typically starts around $1.75 per square foot and rises with the finish level — a Level 5 skim coat costs more than a standard Level 4. We quote per project.
Can you finish drywall someone else hung?
Yes — we regularly tape and finish board hung by a homeowner or another trade. If the hanging has issues that will affect the finish, we will point them out before we start.
